Five years ago I was inspired when Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland appeared on the First Fridays stage parked right in front of the old Auto Electric Building at 120 East Washington St. in Goshen.
This spring Michael Wambaugh wrote a great story of how my work with 91.1 The Globe, resulted in the launch of Ignition Music Garage. Read the article here : Making A Scene.
There are dozens of people who have helped build Ignition Music Garage into a nationally recognized venue. Our members, customers, volunteers, and staff are what makes this a community of music lovers. Four of those folks are already working in the music industry; on tour, in Nashville and Chicago.
We believe that Ignition can be a platform that can launch the careers of other creative artists, right here in Goshen. Our concert series has established a reputation for our community that will help draw more fans to Ignition and eventually other larger venues such as The Goshen Theater.
The impact of the shift to digital distribution
The music industry has changed dramatically in the 5 short years since our vision was developed. Some of it we anticipated, some of it we didn’t. Last year, internet streaming accounted for over 70% of music consumption. The internet is the distribution system for 21st Century music and video. We have been the missionaries for high quality music files since we opened. The battle between entertainment and software corporations is far from over, the question is how the artists will fare as the streaming providers consolidate. Unfortunately, the vast majority of streams have terrible quality of sound due to low bit-rate recordings. The Mp3 codec removes 90% of the recording information. And I guarantee that you can hear it. We demo the difference several times a day.
If we don’t have content on digital platforms we do not exist. So we will sacrifice some of our high-minded ideals in an attempt to help get the word out, especially to those under the age of 35. From the beginning Ignition has tried to share high quality music with people who have never heard the full range of the music that was recorded. We know what happens when listeners experience high quality music, whether it is live or recorded. Very simply, it moves people. We have produced over 200 shows and sold tens of thousands of recordings, it is important to peoples’ lives. Having Ignition Music Garage in Goshen is something many communities envy.
Our plans are to record high quality audio and high definition video from Ignition Garage. We are recording content for this launch. Our digital distribution plans are not fully formed, but we feel it is crtical to bringing in younger fans so we can demonstrate the difference.
Ignition as an incubator for creative artists.
By moving into the digital realm, we hope to connect with new music fans and, hopefully, show the magic that happens when musicians and their songs connect with an audience. We believe that video and online music can be the first connection point between a listener and an artist. If the song and performance are compelling, a new fan is created.
5 Core Media, from Goshen College, has been contracted to produce the first program, a film about the release of Wilson Reservoir’s new album “The Last Will & Testament of Buck Baker”. The record is scheduled for a September 30 national release. The short film will be part of the promotion of the new album.
Nate Butler of Nimble Wit Productions will be the Production Manager, Recording Engineer, and music producer for the project. We hope to build a platform for young film makers, recording engineers, and musicians to create.
Ignition Music Garage is a platform for a more ambitious goal of building a larger stage for artists to develop. These young creative people are plugging in and contributing their voice to this "larger stage". Young people will determine, what Ignition Music Garage is going to be in the future and the dream is that it will continue to grow and become a model for people who work in the industry.
Hundreds of individuals, families, and local businesses have contributed to get us to this point. We have built the platform, now it is time to Build the Stage for more events and art to be created right here in Goshen.

DREAMERS - This Album Does Not Exist - Fairfax Recordings
After more than two years of nomadism and cross-country touring, as well as two EPs, Los Angeles' Dreamers is set to unleash its debut full-length LP This Album Does Not Exist. The smart pop trio, comprised of Nick Wold (vocals/guitar), Nelson (bass/vocals), and Jacob Wick (drums), wrote much for the album in Brooklyn before moving to L.A. and tracking at Fairfax Recordings (formerly Sound City Studios). Led by singles like "Drugs" and "Sweet Disaster," DREAMERS pits the party and the paranoia of escapism in seemingly effortlessly tight, three-minute tunes. Album tracks like "Pain Killer" and "Lucky Dog" follow in this vein, swinging with handclaps and driving with sing-along choruses. Throughout This Album Does Not Exist, DREAMERS toys with themes of existence and existentialism, but it's easy enough to get sucked into their world and dance the big questions away. Also available as an Indie Exclusive Limited Edition White Vinyl

"Tyler and I are continuing to grow musically and personally. We really wanted this album to reflect who we are and our lives in this moment, but also where we came from. Tyler Hubbard adds, we both started out playing guitar, singing in church and writing songs so we wanted to let fans see our foundation a deeper side to us. We couldn't have picked a more fitting title or image for DIG YOUR ROOTS.

THE BEACH BOYS - Becoming The Beach Boys: The Complete Hite & Dorinda Morgan Sessions - Omnivore Recordings
In September of 1961 Al Jardine, Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and Mike Love stepped up to a microphone together for the first time at the home of Hite and Dorinda Morgan to demo The Beach Boys’ first three songs. Between that September date and March 1962, before signing a seven-year contract with Capitol Records on May 24, 1962, they committed nine songs to tape under the direction of Hite and Dorinda Morgan. Some iconic, others obscure—“Surfin’,” “Luau,” "Lavender,” “Surfin’ Safari,” “Surfer Girl,” “Judy,” “Beach Boy Stomp” (aka “Karate”), “Barbie,” and “What Is A Young Girl Made Of”— Every complete take, false start, master take, and every second of studio banter during these historic recordings is gathered on this landmark collection, Becoming The Beach Boys: The Complete Hite & Dorinda Morgan Sessions.
ANGEL OLSEN - My Woman - Jagjaguwar
Anyone reckless enough to have typecast Angel Olsen according to 2013's Burn Your Fire For No Witness is in for a rethink with her third album, My Woman. The crunchier, blown-out production of the former is gone, but that fire is now burning wilder. Her disarming, timeless voice is even more front-and-center. Yet, the strange, raw power and slowly unspooling incantations of her previous efforts remain.
