More Info:

Album from a band that has been running at the edge of Emo/Screamo for 10 years. Based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Respire released the demo EP 'Demonstration' in 2014 and appeared on the scene. Although it was a work from about 10 years ago, at that time they were clearly trying to approach the context of Emo/Screamo and classical/orchestral music. Since then, they have pursued their own musicality through repeated releases from important labels in the passionate hardcore scene such as Zegema Beach Records, Middle-Man Records, and Left Hand Label, and their 2020 album 'Black Line,' which can be said to be the culmination of their activities up to that point, has gained support from an even wider range of listeners. This work 'Hiraeth,' released in 2024, took more than three years to produce. The reason it took so long was that some members had moved from Toronto to Texas, and the physical distance between them was a major constraint. The content of the work reflects the problems and sense of crisis that the members themselves face as immigrants, and at the same time, it also contains expressions that make you feel nostalgia for their hometowns and places to return to, making it an album that evokes a wider range of emotions than their previous works. The Japanese title 'Lost Nostalgia' expresses the content, but you can see that the music, performance, and sound themselves speak to their melancholy and hope for the future more than the lyrics. Although it is a big difference from young, passionate hardcore bands, their expressions that delve into the meaning of life itself and their identity as they go through life have a depth that only a band that has been active for a long time can have, and even the well-worn word 'power of music' is once again felt. Respire is of course heavily influenced musically by their Canadian band Godspeed You! Black Emperor, but it is also important to note that they have feelings for faraway Japan. The envy tribute album 'Envy/Love' released by Zegema Beach Records in 2018 includes a cover of 'Go Mad And Mark' by Respire. MONO and envy, who have been highly acclaimed overseas, take an approach that fuses classical music with post-rock and hardcore, which resonates with Respire's methods. Also, as the EP 'Demonstration' clearly uses the Studio Ghibli film 'Spirited Away' for it's artwork, it seems that they are trying to fuse various elements based on Japanese cultural values. As a band that has always placed importance on the message they convey through music, it is also worth noting that their expression is not based solely on Western values. This work only features Japanese lyrics on the lyric sheet, but the artwork has also been re-edited as a Japanese version except for the front jacket, and we hope you will feel that there is a lot of meaning in that as well.
