Rarely can you believe the hype of albums that stink of praise like "the next Nick Drake, the next Captain Beefheart, the next Syd Barrett." And, in fact, Tywanna Jo Baskette has little in common with any of the above-her voice sounds more like a caterwaul than it does Drake's deep-voiced moan, and, while she's definitely confronting her own demons on Fancy Blue, the epic battle that ensues is hardly comparable to brothers Beefheart (aka Don Van Vliet) or Barrett.

Strip away the comparisons, and whaddaya got? A siren rising from the new South, singing of goat cheese, jellyfish, and parakeets. Baskette is undeniably an otherworldly Nashville girl, her voice alternating between an unholy witch's howl and a child's sing-songy croon. She'll send chills down your spine with songs like "1985/1998" (topic: cancer) and "Pinky," then charm your socks off with such numbers as "Pretty Crazy Daisy" and "Howdy Howdy Howdy Do." But while many of these songs seem as if they were created on a four-track or, more interestingly, an answering machine, Fancy Blue was cut at Dennis Herring's state-of-the-art Sweet Tea recording studio in Oxford, Mississippi.

Listen close, and you'll soon discern the most fascinating thing about this album: thanks to modern technology, it sounds as if Tywanna Jo is whispering these tunes in your ear, like a female Jandek, or a singing extra from "Children of the Corn." In short, her voice is beautiful, but eerily so-for your own safety, I recommend playing this one with the lights on.
